Adaptive Grazing
Grace updates paddock records during a pasture visit tour one of our ranches in Yorkville, California.
“The soil is the great connector of lives, the source and destination of all” - Wendell Berry
California's grassland ecosystems co-evolved with grazing ungulates. The art of raising cattle and sheep exclusively on grass is the art of encouraging this natural relationship. By watching the weather, measuring grass growth, and maintaining careful records of past grazing choices, we maintain healthy soil thatch for the winter, and encourage vigorous growth each spring.
In late 2024, in collaboration with a New Zealand company called Halter, we began shifting from physical to virtual fencing. This new technology allows us to target our grazing for maximal beneficial effects while removing barriers to animal movement across the land we love and share.
